In honor of National Superhero Day, Olomomo would like to recognize the real life superheroes that ignite people's drive to take the long road, reach the summit, have the courage to stand up and be the change we want to see in this world.
Olomomo, our mascot, is the monkey god of adventure. He is the voice in your head that tells you to "go for it.". We chose three real life superheroes that exemplify Olomomo's motto: Be nutty, be good, be adventurous.
Be Nutty: Dean Karnazes
You've heard us hail Olomomo ambassador Dean Karnazes before, but did you know he truly has superhuman abilities? An international ultramarathon champion, Dean has the ability to run literally hundreds of miles without cramping. Cramping in the body is a result of lactic acid accumulation in the muscle tissue, leading to pain and fatigue. Dean's rare genetic composition allows his body to rapidly process and flush out lactic acid, preventing build-up, and therefore enabling him to run extreme distances without stopping. In 2006, this trait allowed him to easily accomplish 50 marathons in 50 days. That's just nutty!
In 2016, Dean ran for 8 days across Haiti (240 miles!) as part of a fundraiser for the Haitian people and also completed a 12 day 326 mile run along the Silk Road through Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhtan as part of the US State Department’s Sports Diplomacy program. Looking forward, Dean aspires to run a marathon in every country in one year.
"Run when you can, walk when you have to, crawl if you must; just never give up." -Dean Karnazes
Be Good: Ron Finley
In 2010, Ron Finley decided it was time to make a healthy change in his community. He planted the Gansta Garden, creating a food oasis on an abandoned plot of city-owned land in South Central Los Angeles. Seven years later, he is still fighting to keep his garden and community headquarters on the land that continues to power a food revolution. Ron Finley's Gansta Garden is a symbol of how perseverance can overcome hardship and nourish not only a community's body, but also its soul.
"I don't grow food, I grow people, and then they grow food. It's about the experience. It's about awareness. It's about knowing where you come from, realizing that you have a choice in this. Wake up and change your life." -Ron Finley
Be adventurous: Georgina Miranda
Georgina Miranda, another prized Olomomo ambassador, encompasses all that a superhero represents to humanity. Her desire to bring change and awareness to gender-based violence motivated her to transform from a woman who had never run a mile, to a woman who has crested 6 of the "7 Summits" (the highest peak on each continent). Georgina's accomplishments prove that people should not be deterred if they do not have super human features. Adventure is an attitude, and therefore, accessible to everyone.
"The mountains have shaped the woman I have become and for that I am eternally grateful. They have taught me lessons no text book or job ever could. They have shown me a world I never imagined I would see. They have made me authentic, humble, resilient, fearless, respectful, and filled with gratitude for life and the ability to dream. They have proven that the extraordinary is always possible and that I should never limit myself or life's potential." - Georgina Miranda

Let Olomomo motivate you to define the meaning of adventure, because in the end, adventure is simply an attitude.
Just go for it.
